Privacy Policy
Last updated: 31 October 2026
The short version
Miles & Mud is a small, independently-run touring site. We only ask for your details when you contact us, post on the Pillion board, or tick the box to get updates by email. We don't use tracking cookies, we don't sell your data, and we don't run ads that follow you around the web. Our own visit-counting is completely anonymous — it can't identify you, and you can switch it off (see below). The only place your information might reach a company other than us is if you click through to a site we link to, like Booking.com, Airbnb or Google Maps — and that's covered below too.
Who we are
Miles & Mud (milesandmud.co.uk) is a UK motorcycle touring website. For anything to do with this policy or your information, contact:

Information you give us directly
Enquiry form
When you use the "Get in touch" form, we collect your name, email address and message so we can reply to you. If you tick the box to receive updates and offers by email, we also keep a record that you agreed, and when, so we can show we have your permission. Leaving that box unticked just sends your enquiry — you won't be added to any mailing list. You can ask to be removed from the mailing list, or to unsubscribe, at any time.
Pillion & rider matching board
If you post to the Pillion board, we collect the name or handle, region, dates, ride details and contact information (email, phone or social handle — whatever you choose to share) that you type into the form. This information is shown publicly on the site once your post is approved, so that other riders can get in touch with you directly — this is made clear on the posting form itself before you submit. Please only share contact details you're comfortable having public.
Adding an event
The "Add an event" form asks about the event itself (name, date, location, description, and an optional link or contact for the event) — it doesn't ask for your own name or personal details.
Moderation
Pillion posts and submitted events are reviewed by us before they go live, which is why there can be a short delay before yours appears.
Anonymous site usage data
We keep simple, anonymous counts of which parts of the site get used — for example, how many people view the Routes tab or click into Events — so we know what's worth improving. This does not use cookies, doesn't record your IP address, and can't identify you or be linked back to you in any way; we only ever see totals like "Routes: 42 visits this week."
If you'd rather not be counted at all, you can switch this off in your browser by visiting milesandmud.co.uk/?notrack=1 once. This is remembered only on your own device.
Information stored only in your browser
If you use the heart/favourite icon to save routes or rides you're interested in, that list is stored only in your own browser's local storage. It's never sent to us or seen by anyone else, and it disappears if you clear your browser's site data.
Cookies
Miles & Mud itself does not set any tracking or advertising cookies. The only things saved on your device are the local browser storage items described above, which stay on your device and are never transmitted to us.
If you click through to another website from ours (see below), that site may set its own cookies once you're there, under its own privacy and cookie policy — not ours.
Other websites we link to
Parts of the site link out to other companies' own websites — for example, Google Maps for directions, Airbnb and Booking.com for accommodation near a route, and AutoTrader for bikes for sale. These are separate websites with their own privacy policies, and we'd encourage you to check them if you're concerned. We don't share any of your personal information with these companies by linking to them.
Some of our Booking.com links are run through an affiliate advertising network called CJ Affiliate, which may place its own tracking cookie when you click through, so it can record that the visit came from Miles & Mud. This helps support the site at no extra cost to you. You can read CJ Affiliate's own privacy notice at cj.com/privacy-policy.
Fonts
This site loads its typefaces from Google Fonts. When a page loads, your browser requests those font files directly from Google, which may see your IP address as part of that request, under Google's own privacy policy.
How we store your information
Enquiries, Pillion posts and event submissions are stored securely in our website's own database, hosted by Hostinger, our web hosting provider. We don't sell, rent or trade your personal information to anyone.
How long we keep it
We keep enquiries, Pillion posts and event submissions for as long as they're useful for the purpose you sent them for, or until you ask us to remove them. If you'd like something you've submitted removed sooner, just email us and we'll take it down.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law, you have the right to:
- ask what personal information we hold about you;
- ask us to correct it if it's wrong;
- ask us to delete it;
- withdraw consent to marketing emails at any time; and
- complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) if you think we've got something wrong — ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint.
To use any of these, just email contact@milesandmud.co.uk.
Age
The Pillion board is for riders and pillions aged 18 and over only, as stated on that page. Miles & Mud is not aimed at children.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Please check back occasionally.
